Running around New York.

Wikipedia, the go-to source on everything, is authored mostly by men.

The gender ratio on the German wikipedia is about 8 men for every 1 woman. We might expect the ratio to be skewed in a similar way on the english language wikipedia. As a frequent editor my experience backs this up. Now, women make up the majority of internet users. So: why is the wikipedia so heavily male? (I never thought of "writing an encyclopedia" as an activity that is stereotyped as male.)

This has an impact on the content of the wikipedia, needless to say. For example of the biographies that I surveyed (roughly 200) only 16 percent were of women. Articles on feminist topics are often of poor quality. What's keeping women away?
