Women's entire worth and power should not revolve around sex. And I'm not trying to criticize the women here, they are trying to end violence with the only power society gives them.
Erm, I guess I kind of ended that early. My point is, what they are trying to do (end violence) is a good thing, the route the are taking may not be a good one but the problem is that societies value women in terms of sexuality, not these particular women.
If anything it makes me sad that sex is really the only power these women have, and it has to be psychologically damaging to know "I'm worth nothing if I can't be of sexual service to a man."
Asking "Is this feminist?" is sort of a multi-answer question. Is it feminist in the Western, able-bodied, white, middle-class way? Probably not. Is it feminist in the local sense? Perhaps. For us to sit up and pass judgement is reprehensible, and frankly, not feminist at all.
FYI, I just deleted this same comment verbatim b/c the icon that mysteriously popped up was rather inappropriate, in my opinion. I didn't want to include that w/ my post, given the subject matter. Mods, sorry!
ITA. What "feminist action" means in one place may be very different in another place. Is that so hard to understand? All women all around the world do not hold the same amount of power (if any!), so how are they supposed to try and change their lives? They can try and change them by the ways that work best for them in their particular country, neighborhood, economic level, family situation etc.
I live in a particular environment here in the US, one in which it is relatively easy for me to pick and choose which actions I want to participate in that will make any amount of difference in my life as a woman. I think a lot of people in similar situations take those choices for granted.

I posted this in in my own journal, and several folks immediately responded that they hoped the husbands/boyfriends didn't resort to rape to get sex. I was really offended by that, but I can't tell you exactly why. I'm not going to touch the argument above with a fifty-foot pole, but I will say that I support these women in their strike. The violence-reduction/human rights organization I work with has been in Colombia for the last five years, I have a huge interest in watching how these events unfold.
I think what offended you was the idea that rape comes from sexual desire/lack of sex. I understand what you're saying and agree that the idea is an offensive one.
However, I think in this case the fear is justified. These men are used to gaining things by violence and intimidation. Let's hope they don't apply that to sex.
Don't think it'll work, but, ehh, power to them. Violent people aren't necessarily rapists, so here's hoping that their boyfriends aren't really "like that".
On another note, "Lysistrata" was a comedy that made fun of how sex-crazed women were. They could barely hold out during the strike.

They have my prayers that they're right. Violent men should be avoided completely.
