Commercials (US Centric)

There is a new Burger King commercial that I saw for the first time a few days ago, for the Texas Double Whopper, and I really don't like it. It's basically men singing about rebelling against "chick food" (because apparently women only eat tofu and shrimp and plants), tearing off their ties (because apparently they only wear those when women make them), and throwing minivans off bridges (because apparently they only drive those when women make them). I find this commercial really offensive, but I'm not sure why other than I think it perpetuates damaging gender stereotypes, and I have decided not to eat at Burger King until they stop playing this commercial. I also plan to call them on my day off this week, as their website says they do not accept e-mail communication. Has anyone else seen this commercial? What do you think about it?

I was discussing this with a friend of mine who lives in BC and she said she doubts it will be shown up there. There is a commercial for Tostitos where three men are standing around eating chips while their female coworker does all the work, and according to my friend, they decided it was sexist and pulled it from the air (I wouldn't mind confirmation on this).

[Edit: Link to the commercial is here, curteousy of shelpen]

i think it's offensive in different ways

it's bad for guys, because not all guys are meat eaters, and it's basically saying you need to like conquests and eat massive amounts of meat to be a macho manly man. my boyfriend is no less a man because he's vegetarian.

it's bad for women who eat meat or can seriously chow down, because it encourages the idea that men eat a lot, women are always chowing down on rabbit food and salads because they're concerned about their figure. women don't need to feel bad for eating a big burger if that's what they want to do. as a woman, i feel like i should order some of their burgers and polish them off saying "hey look at me, i'm lacking a penis yet i can still eat a lot!!" (only being a vegetarian, i wouldn't).

i ranted about it here: http://community.livejournal.com/veg_feminism/56120.html

I think that is one of the other things I found offensive (on the lines of the massive gender stereotyping). Eating already makes me feel bad about myself. Women don't need to continue to see that they are supposed to be satisfied eating skimpy food, and men don't need to continue see that they aren't real men unless they eat a ton of red meat.

>and eat massive amounts of meat to be a macho manly man.<

Irony - eating a ton of hamburgers from Burger King will probably kill you in the end :P
Not just cause it's a lot of not exactly quality red meat but because they come from Burger King

So I say go ahead chauvinistic males, eat all the Buger King burgers you want ;)
